title shot for free...

July 18, 2009

Still bugged by a recent post a propos to fighters being stepping stones where the iceman and the hammer were both declared to be “done”, “washed up”, “past their prime”, explicitly some considers them as springboards for up and coming ufc fighters...

These are two fighters shogun has recently toppled... If they are veritable launch pads, like what some people believe, does this mean shogun was given the title shot for free??Forrest, coming of a win from hector Ramirez, was closed to being convened as shogun’s stepping stone when he signed in for the fight... What many thought to be an effortless job for shogun turned out to be the one of the greatest upsets in history... still a stepping stone?? Maybe yes, maybe no, but certain he didn’t watch his steps ergo his fall... Point being is why are the fighters tossed to him were deemed to be not as solid as the others and when he defeated them, hence a title shot??

All the hype shogun had coming from PRIDE already turned out to be a big question... he was a big star there but he lost in his first ufc fight, he gassed out, he tapped out, he was submitted, he quit!!! I’ve read a lot of comments why maia has yet to get a title shot... they say one thing, the fighters he’d beaten don’t have the same aptitude of fighting compared to marquardt’s, franklin’s, and hendo’s... Win against one of them, you get a shot with AS... WTF??? These are high calibre fighters we’re talking about... and chuck coming of two losses (devastating losses)??? coleman from nowhere?? Dont forget, Machida earned his shot beating tough guns; sokoudju, Ortiz, and silva...

I know the one next in line would be coaching the next TUF so he got the shot... But can we say Dana and the UFC see the fire back in SHOGUN???

He believes he has the answer to Machida’s riddle... (http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/anmviewer.asp?a=9174&z=13) “Most of the guys that fought Lyoto found a problem with patience, with finding the right moment to attack, or to counter-strike him. Some guys try to rush it too much; some guys try to stay too patient, (and) they start to get nervous because of that. I think the key is the timing of the fight, to get the feeling of when to engage and when to counter-strike him. This is likely the key, to find the pace and the rhythm, mostly the timing of the strikes to be able to connect and to make it a fight. For sure, I’m going to concentrate on that and develop a good strategy.” –shogun

Worthy or not, he will fight Machida for the title and i do hope he’ll be back to his own self (the animal who had KTFO rampage in PRIDE)... If we happen to see another cinderela performance in the cage, i don’t know man, maybe we have to stop dreaming of seeing the old shogun...

By the way, what shogun said in the interview is very easy to say... Do you believe he can do this???

like you said man, it's very easy to say the right things but i don't think he can do it...machida is a master of timing and although shogun has looked more impressive lately, to me, his style still seems too wild to out strike machida...however shogun has some very good submissions and if ortiz could nearly catch machida in a triangle then i see no reason why shogun doesn't have a chance (a small chance but still a chance)

I think styles make fights and Shogun can make it entertaining. Can he win is the big question and i think so, but right now i would just settle for seeing someone give Machida a good fight and i do think Rua can do that. I think his early problems were just ring rust not having fought in awhile and then two surgeries. I do feel we havent seen the best Rua yet and a fight like this will bring out the best in him.

Shogun has paid his dues and is high in the rankings, so it is not too big of a deal he gets the title shot. He will not win. Machida will TKO him no matter the timing issues.

old shogun. shogun with glitches. shogun 2.0. it doesnt matter to me which one comes to fight lyoto because to me, rua's paid his dues, earned his status and got lucky along the way - hence this title shot. nothing remotely like brock.

that being said, it's lyoto via t/ko in the 2nd or early 3rd.

i agree with gretz - i too despise lesnar-scandals [ie, free title shot passes]. however, i must disagree that shogun badly needed to earn this shot. bear in mind that he came in to ufc with an astonishing 16-2 record - and while his last two wins were as lukewarm as they come, still his record is far from deeply pathetic as lesnar's 2-1overall mma record upon earning his title shot. plus, rampage would rightfully have been in shogun's shoes [nothing rua would kill to keep on] had the jackson manned-up and opted for it. it's not like shogun got handed the golden ticket to willy wonka's chocolate factory the way brock was.

i think he was one win off from a title shot they should have put him up against someone like franklin or cane first probally can since he has a nice lil win streak going (3) or maybe even jon jones. but i guess we will find out. the ufc has a history of giving people title shots before the deserve it so nothing new here bro. that is one fight i would like to see actually cane vs jones
