greatest ufc champions of all time

July 4, 2009

let's see if we have the same cards..

HW - Randy Couture.. almost all his fights in the ufc are title fights.. he's the first person to tear down belfort who at that time was a heavy favored fighter.. beat a phenomenal striker in pedro rizzo, not once but twice.. he'd done the impossible (considering his age disadvantage) stealing the belt from a strong gigantic champ tim sylviaa and defended it impressively against gonzaga, again age wasn't a factor.. held the HW belt twice, i say its randy..

LHW - Chuck Liddell.. this is my fave KO artist of all time.. grabbed the belt from tito via vicious strikes.. He did annihilate some good fighters on his way to the top of the lhw division.. randleman, belfort, monzon, mezger, bustamante, suloev, and sobral, who are definitely NOT SCRUBS.. he beat tito twice, randy twice, and babalu twice.. He was able to avenge his loss against horn and recently went to war against one of the best of all time, wanderlei silva, and won..One of the most known ufc fighters in the history..he's got to be everyone's choice..

MW - Anderson Silva.. simple unbeatable right now.. p4p # 2 best fighter next to fedor.. very smart, tactical, and classy fighter.. he certainly owns the mw division right now, no questions asked..

WW - Matt Hughes..probably the most dominant ufc champ of all time.. he was the AS of his division for several years..the WWs were continuously improving that time, so was he.. had wins against tough bastards like trigg, newton, sherk, and lytle.. he had beaten some of the big names in the league like penn, gracie and GSP.. everyone felt his dominance in the division, until a much improved GSP came..

LW - can't think of any.. i say, so far, its penn coz he gave a beating to some of the best ufc lw in stevenson, sherk, and pulver.. but not after ufc 101..

ps: I think Royce Gracie should be considered one of the greatest champs of all time, if not, the greatest IMO.. he contributed a lot in the sport.. a member of ufc hall of fame who won the first ever ufc tournament...against gigantic opponents.. did it again in ufc 2 and 4.. yes, he was beaten by sakuraba and hughes but take note of the age disadvantage he had against the 2.. plus the fact that he and his style was already studied by these 2 before the fight took place.. if the fight happens during his prime, i guarantee a different result..

just wanna see who your choice in each division is..thanks..

While the HW championship kept changing hands Frank Shamrock was the definative Champion, defending his title a record of 4x. A record that would be surpassed by Tito Ortiz with 5 title defenses. Though 2 fights were considered a fight. But none the less, these two were the definition of greatness for their time. But all in all, Isay it has to go to Randy Couture.

I agree with Randy Couture, he and Tim Sylvia are the only heavies to defend the title 3 times in different times. And looking back Chuck really defended his title 3x against top competition, but he still was the champ. Props is definately given. Matt Hughes was the best in his time, even beating a nervous GSP in the 1st fight. Everyone seems to leave out 2 fighters that were long reigning champs. Tito Ortiz & Frank Shamrock.

Hughes for sure but in 3 or 4 years GSP might over take him as best WW.

I think Lyoto Machida's story has yet to be written! He is great! He is undefeated and a humble fighter, he was willing to continue fighting as many fights as the UFC saw necessary for him to get a title shot. i give respect to that as compared to fighters winning twice and proclaiming themselves #1 contender and trashtalking! He could go down in the books as 1 of the best fighters to step in the Octagon, he isn't like other fighters that are tattoos and spiked hair talking down on people...d@mn that described the Whole American team from this past TUF season?

Great job on the blog, well done and fun to read. I like all your choices though i predict one day Lyoto will out shine Chuck and GSP will take Hughes's spot, if he hasnt already. Dont forget GSP was winning the first fight against Hughes convincingly, and then left that arm sticking up in the air.

nice choices bro i think franklin is a close second. and penn is a champion but unless he focuses more on training and realizes he needs to stay at 155 he will never be a great champion. he is a great fighter (unlimited potenial) but there is a big differene between a fighter and a champion. i myself think florian has what it takes to be a great champion. cant wait to see those 2 throw down.
