Good strikers, poor grappling

June 18, 2009

If fighters like wanderlei, chuck, franklin, crocop, congo add a little grappling to their game, could they possibly get to their winning ways?

Its always good if a fighter knows how to mix up his skills when he fights.. GSP, Fedor, and Anderson are some of the fighters who intelligently use all of their skills from their arsenal when they fight.. It confuses their opponents, and that's when they start to lose.. the fighters i've mentioned above are some of the most commonly criticized ufc fighters because people dont see anything new from them.. they train wrestling, but they dont show it when they fight.. they focus more on their standup.. if they add wrestling to their game, do you think it would make any difference??

Guys tend to still fight where theyre comfortable. They can train all they want on the ground but if theyre more comfortable on their feet then when the bell rings, survival kicks in and thats where that try to keep it, and vice versa with bjj fighters.

i guess unpredictably is an edge the likes of gsp and spider uses with killer precision and that's what the fighters aforementioned are lacking. i'm a huge, huge iceman fan but i have to admit his opponents have got him all figured out now - and that is why he has been romancing the canvass as of late. a little guessing game added to their other talent would certainly do them much good.

The evolution of MMA is so improved that it takes a fully rounded out skill set to win and win consistantly. Look at maybe a fighter who hasn't lost a bout for say........nearly ten years and ask yourself why. Because he can be proficient at all aspects of MMA. Now a specialist can win once in a while but not consistently in MMA. Fedor is a good example, look at his fights online and see the array of skill set he posses. GSP is also very well rounded. Serra is a natural puncher for his size. Punchers always have punchers chance regardless if their out classed in other skill sets. Punchers can finish it with one shot, If they get it right. IF.

Yeah I agree i like to see all aspects of MMA in every single bout i think it makes it more exciting to me. I think if Chuck doesn't stay retired we will see more of his wrestling the next time he fights.

yes they have, but they use that primarily as defense.. if they use such skills and initiate a grappling match, do u think they'll win? IMO, its possible.. as a fan, i appreciate a fighter who tries all things to win.. even if they don't fit to be one (wrestler/grappler).. if they win a fight by utilizing a skill fans have never seen before, that would be so damn cool..
