Sadollah-Baroni bumped up to main card status
October 30, 2009TUF 7 winner against the New York Bad Ass to fill vacant spot on UFC 106 main card
I recently read this on another MMA site and also found a comment on my profile page from COSMOSHERRY requesting I blog about this fight and the fact that it is now a main card attraction. And I never like to let people down.
Already I have heard rumblings of people querying, 'Why is this fight on the main card?' and 'Why not Davis-Saunders or Grove-Rosholt?' I think the reasoning behind this fight being picked ahead of the other two mentioned is simple;
1) Amir is very marketable - Sadollah is the loveable guy who won TUF 7 against all odds and left everybody eagerly awaiting his full UFC debut. And despite numerous injuries plaguing him and a quick KO loss to Johnny Hendricks once that debut eventually came, I think people are still rooting for Amir and looking forward to seeing him fight.
2) Baroni will ham it up for the cameras - As much as I despise Baroni I must admit, he can sell a fight. In the build-up he will most likely be at his cocky, arrogant best. He will flex his body builder like muscles and probably even mention his penus (He usually does, and I know it's spelled wrong but they wouldn't let me type in the correct spelling). But most importantly he will fit the bad guy role and most fans watching will want to see nice guy Amir de-rail the NYBA's questionable UFC return.
3) It will be an exciting fight - Baroni has got heavy hands, Sadollah has got tremendous Muay Thai. This fight should not go the distance and could very well end in a brutal KO either way. If the fight hits the ground then Amir will have a significant advantage but I haven't seen a Sadollah fight hit the ground yet because he wanted to be there! Also I feel although the Grove-Rosholt fight is a great match up, it could result in a tentative battle that lasts the full 15 minutes. Rosholt shooting for a takedown and scoring on occasions but being cautious of Kendall's BJJ. As for the Saunders-Davis fight, on paper it looks like it should be a brawl. But so did the Swick-Saunders fight at UFC 99. I was in attendance that night and eagerly awaiting that fight and then it began and 30 seconds in Ben pulled guard and held on to Swick for an extended amount of time. Then when the fight did play out on the feet it was abundantly clear that he was outclassed by the Quick one.
If the UFC continue airing two live prelim fights then I feel Grove-Rosholt and Saunders-Davis definitely should be the choices to go with. However I just don't see them being as interesting as Sadollah-Baroni, and that is why Amir-Phil has been added to the main card.
