HEY BABY, SIZE MATTERS

July 13, 2009

NOW IT'S PROVEN ! !

WELCOME TO THE ERA OF THE SUPER HEAVIES This is not a blog about liking Lesnar or not. I want to discuss some facts. There have been and will be plenty of blogs dishing Lesnar, I’ll leave that for others. Well, all the hoopla is over but, not the debate. Brock is the champ period. However this does obviate the point there needs to be a Super Heavy Weight Division or we’ll see more chemically created monsters; {CCM} simply use their size to dominate an opponent. I love the heavies but, I also want to see a fight that involves skill and equal chance. The one thing that is clear to me is the weight difference cannot be made up by skill alone. 30, 40, 50lbs is just too much. [Not even Gracie could have fared any better] I have blogged about the need for another weight class for the Super Heavies before. Look, face the statistical facts, size matters after a certain point. Human being’s have been becoming larger on average [Darwinian Evolutional Theories] and is well documented when the Normans invaded the island nation in 1066 with the great Norman horse by the large Norseman. So unless we want to see more fights that are just determined by size, then we need to recognize the average man is bigger or we will see more of this and less competition in the traditional Heavy Weight Class. This point is most obvious with the Heavy Weight because of the old traditional weight divisions. We use the same basic divisions set up by the Marquess of Queensberry 143 years ago. [ Marquis of Queensberry rules. “Code of boxing rules.” It was written by John Graham Chambers and published in 1867 under the sponsorship of John Sholto Douglas, marquess of Queensberry (1844 – 1900) ].....(1889 US Heavy Weights were 190lbs)..... Mir was over powered plain and simple. If you’re a Brock fan or not we all saw that. Suggestion for the UFC, make a Super Heavy Weight Division. Size matters and for the sake of competition this new class needs to be implemented.

Now, I want to know WHAT DOES THE COMMUNITY THINK ABOUT THE SUPERHEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION or OTHER SUGGESTIONS regarding competition in the “Heavy Weight Division."

In 1909 The National Sporting Club (NSC) in London announced fixed poundages for eight weight classes:.......................

Flyweight 112lb - 50.4kg

Bantamweight 118lb - 53.1kg

Featherweight 126lb - 56.7kg

Lightweight 135lb - 60.7kg

Welterweight 147lb - 66.15kg

Middleweight 160lb - 72kg

Cruiserweight 175lb - 78.75kg

Heavyweight over 12st 7lb............................................................................................................

The world of boxing accepted the new weight classes, except for the term ‘cruiserweight’ in America, where there was already a 175lb class called ‘lightheavyweight’. This had been suggested by Lou Houseman, a Chicago newsman, in the interests of Jack Root, who was between the recognized middleweight and heavyweight limits. The British eventually changed their name for the class ‘cruiser’ to ‘lightheavyweight’ in 1937.2.................................................................................

Before 1909, even in weight classes which were generally acknowledged, some champions fixed weight limits to suit themselves. For instance, Bob Fitzsimmons raised the middleweight limit from 154 lbs to 158 lbs for his title defense against Dan Creedon in 1894. Fitzsimmons was a heavy middleweight and was having trouble meeting 154 lbs.3

Junior Lightweight - 1921-1933; 1959-present 130lb - 58.5kg - The first champion Johnny Dundee, November 18, 1921-4

Light welterweight - 1922 by American boxing magazine “The Boxing Blade” 140lb - 663kg - the readers chose the first champion Pinkey Mitchell. Title lapsed in the mid 1930s; revived in 1946; and 1959.5.......................................................................................................................................

Light-middleweight - 1962-present 154lb - 70kg6

Cruiserweight - 1979- present (WBC) 195lb - 88kg7

Better off commenting now then never (L0L) Incredible blog man and thanks for the history lesson.(haha) Ever since Brock beat Randy, Iv been saying that there should be bigger division for Monsters like that.I think the HW & Super-HW division should be as follows..... HW = 206 lbs - 250 lbs. and the Super- HW division = 251 lbs. - 300 lbs.

I appreciate the compliment Doc Otagon. Thanks. The 8ft skeletons that may have been found are abnormal though. Yeah Cave, I know what you mean and we are in complete agreement here, same as 007. Twisted and Tank it’s too big not too change [50-60 lb differences]. Then let’s just do open tourney’s old school style. Speaking of school…. Kid’ hit the books, “you ain’t gonna be no big playa, so hit da books.” and look in the mirror when putting on your hat, it's crooked. haha. Learn how to stand up straight for god sake’s son.

ONCE AGAIN,GREAT BLOG. I wanted to comment about a couple of your minor points. If Darwinian Evolution were true (size increase of people) then there couldn't be larger humans in the past (thousands of years ago). The fact is that giant skeletons have been found (8 feet +) and there is historical evidence that they existed also. I believe there is a surge of increased size because nutrition has vastly improved, quality supplements are readily available, many have rest and exercise at their disposal, and improved health care/meds. If you are worried about getting your next meal, working manual labor, sleep deprived, and constantly fighting illness...its hard to grow.

Still not true, its about how you control the outcome. And another thing is. Its not the size of the dawg in the fight....its the size of the fight in the dawg

superheavy weight is worth a try. Many men like myself are solid a 220lbs. To cut more to get to light heavyweight would be killing muscle and hydration. So im a "undersized heavyweight" hmmmmm? does that sound right.

Bas Rutton says a punch is a punch from 230lbs up....no difference. Well most big guy know there weight is part to their advantage.

    i vote superheavyweight for sure!!!
