UFC 104: The Illusion of Invincibility is what won the fight for Rua
October 25, 2009The aura surrounding Machida was one if infalibility, going into this fight no one had even came close to beating him and everything he had done in the octogon was as close to perfection as one can come. And when you perform as well Machida had, people st
The First round we saw what very few had expected and none had ever seen, A round so close that Machida may have lost it. Lyoto had never lost a round, and the previous fights that night had all been dominant performances that left no doubt in the mind who had won the round. But this was different. Rua had found his range in great time and landed solid kicks, not enough to do immediate damage, but he had landed strikes on a fighter that at times had appeared unhittable at times. By round 2 you could see that not a lot was going to change, Rua had a great gameplan, and is disciplined enough to stick to it for 5 rounds. Machida is the epitome of a counter striker, and wasn't going to be the one to strike first. When the decision was announced, the winner was not what shocked me most, the truly amazing thing is that not one judge called one round a draw. Shogun in my opinion only appeared to do enough to win the round because of Machidas' reputation going into the fight, that being said Machida didn't do enough to win any round (except maybe the 3rd) When both Fighters implement a game plan of counter striking or trying to inflict lasting damage which will wear down the other in later rounds then the fight is always going to be very close, sometimes it's just to close to call a winner. I saw at least 2 rounds being a draw, but because of Lyotos' achievments and records going into the fight, it gave the illusion that Rua performed better than he actually did
