The One Fighter That Best Defines MMA

July 6, 2009

The world of MMA is getting bigger. Everyday, a new batch of talented well rounded fighters enters the sport. So I pose this question: Who would YOU pick as the fighter that best represents the sport of MMA?

This was a rough choice for me. There are 2 glaring choices that stand out IMO, but actually choosing between them is the hardest part.

Fighter #1: George "Rush" St. Pierre.

This man has so much talent it can actually hurt to watch him fight! He makes people look silly at what they are best at! GSP is, by far IMO, the most athletically gift fighter in the world today. GSP is one of the most well rounded fighters in the UFC and MMA as a whole. His wrestling is second to none, and I mean NONE. Considering he accomplished this without the wrestling pedigree that many others have is even more astounding! He can stand and bang with the best ( ask Matt Hughes about his head kicks) AND he is a BJJ Black Belt. Add all this together and you get one of the best fighters around

and now the man that IMO is the MOST well rounded fighter in MMA

Fighter #2:Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida.

Never in the history of MMA have a seen anything like this man. This Japanese/Brazilian has taken the status quo, and turned it on its head. Styles that most people felt were obsolete in MMA have found new life through the nimble legs of this fighter. He has drawn from Martial Arts such as Karate, Sumo, Wrestling, BJJ, Judo, and MT and morphed them into a style all his own. And in doing so, created a fighter in himself that is nearly invincible. Now add to this a solid chin, great cardio, and a continuing drive to improve himself as a fighter and you have the man that IMHO is the best all around fighter in MMA to date. This mans picture should be in the dictionary next to the word - FIGHTER

These are just my thoughts, I'm curious to hear yours. Feel free to agree or disagree

Great blog. I would have to go with Machida. Check out my best P4P fighter blog. I'd love to hear your take of the comparisons. I have my patented side by side stats of the 3 best fighters in the UFC, thus making a comparison easier.

Machida is masterful, but no champion should drink their own urine. It's called waste for a reason. But all in all, I'd have to give a vote out to Miguel Torres.

I would have to go with GSP. He is always classy, has tremendous all-around skills, and is a good representative of the sport- the sort of person who will really help MMA gain mainstream acceptance. His fights are always exciting, and I think he is at the start of run of greatness that will last for a long time. Plus he's really cute =)

As far as Machida goes, he has certainly been impressive so far, but I think the jury is still out until he defends the title two or three times and we see how he behaves as champ.
