the WEC, should they get their weight classes back?

August 6, 2009

Hear me out on this

Now after UFC(zuffa) bought out Pride, Lorenzo Fertita wanted to keep the Promotion running. And why not, Pride kicked ass. But Dana White wanted to intregrate all the fighters to UFC. Some went, some didn't. If they had kept it rolling, we could've seen Fedor in UFC no doubt at all. And seen some UFC guys over there in Pride too.

This was my thoughts on WEC after UFC purchased WEC. The big F**K up I saw was that Dana White once again stripped the WEC of its fighters. Mainly the Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Welterweight classes. And melded them into UFC. The WEC had a Heavyweight Division early on, but cut them out since there weren't enough to make one.

UFC should've ruuned WEC like a farm club(not to be referring to a drug party). Like baseball has the triple A clubs where they can get new recruits. UFC should've utilized this for future up & comers. Make their names known first, then bring them to UFC. Like Carlos Condit. He dominated their welterweight division, so the next step is UFC. And kept the ball rolling with new champions. If they are that dominant there. The next step is the big leagues.

Jon Jones, a great Light Heavyweight contender. Only 22 years of age, and competes in UFC. My take on him is not bad mouthing him, but I feel that bringing someone up that young can cause some problems. He has the best mindset for a fighter, and thats saying something. But I feel he can get better if he fought more times and reached his potential before entering UFC.

We've seen Brian Stann, and Steve Cantwell fight in UFC. So far Cantwell is the only one with a victory. But he fought someone similar to his caliber. Same goes for Stann. The WEC was the best place for them to really show their skills against fighters of their caliber. Once they dominate their division, like Condit move to UFC where they have more than enough experience.

And they dont need to have the Champions there if thats the problem, just have them gain experience. Cantwell is also around 22, and still has a lot of years to go before fighting the guys at UFC. Same goes for Heavyweights. WEC had a division, but that was scrapped. Forget TUF, just bring them in and let the best Heavies stand out, and let the others hang in there(wec). UFC needs Heavyweights, so what better way to make them then the WEC. Let Kimbo fight on there and see what kind of competition is waiting for him. Same goes with all Heavyweights.

My best argument is the age factor, and records of some of these guys. Shane Carwin 11-0(older), Cain 6-0(younger). To me thats not enough, let them pile up more fights before going against the grain of the sport. Mustapha Al Turk is my best example. He comes in and says how he's going to beat his opponents, and bang.......out in the 1st round. He's 6-4, thats not good for any fighter especially in UFC.

This is what happened to Tierry Rameau Sokoudjou. He is dynamic, but was too green. He needed a lot more experience. He debuted against Lyoto Machida for crying out loud. Then he won against someone of his caliber, but then lost to Luis Cane who is better & more experienced in top level competition(international). WEC has there champions in Lightweight(soon to get stripped), Featherweight, and Bantamweight divisions to keep them on the spotlight, until Dana finally decides to bring them in UFC as well.

The WEC is a great tool to make better fighters. The best come from working their way up the ladder, not by throwing them in against the lions of the game. Dana says there are not enough Women to make a division for them. Well make one, I'm sure women from all over are willing to fight to prove Dana wrong. WEC is in need of something great. Uriah Faber was the reason WEC is as popular, but now that he isn't champion, or there anymore(injury), I think it will hurt WEC. They still have Miguel Torres as the other face, but they need more.

If I were Dana White I would use WEC to its full advantage & Potential to make something great even greater. This is my assessment on WEC. To you guys agree or disagree?

Great blog I have said this same thing before Dana White is not using WEC to its full potential they are more of an after thought and that is shame.

beautifullt put i know u read my blogs on bones and i agree if he had a year to romp ass in wec as champ or just fighting more fights to reach that extra level he would have a really good shot in the ufc.saying that i still feel he is a bright prospect amd only time will tell.his best asset is that he is his own worst critic so he will vastly improve.also i agree entirely on the pride issue it would have been great but thats what happens when money is more then mma.

I disagree. I like the direction WEC is heading with focusing on the lighter weightclasses. I'm especially looking foward to the flyweight division coming up in 2010. And "The African Assassin" didn't have a bad debut against Lyoto. I mean, if he could knock out Rogerio like nothing, maybe he could've handled Lyoto.

Yea man thats a good take on it. I think that would be a great thing for both the WEC and the UFC. It would give up and coming fighters somewhere to prove themselves. The UFC is extremely difficult to get into, having the WEC would at least give more talented fighers a chance to make it.
