WANTED: Dragon Slayer
July 28, 2009“I’m going to root for Lyoto [Machida]. I’m not saying Shogun is not prepared but how long did Lyoto have to wait to get a title shot? The truth is Shogun fought twice and how many fights Machida had to do?"
”Its obvious something is up. I’m not here to talk bad words on nobody but life is made of chances and I said to our managers this fight shouldn’t happen. Shogun didn’t fight enough to deserve the belt. The thing is precious and if I was Lyoto I wouldn’t accept. He is a great champion and must be respected but this is my opinion. [That said], I’ve much respect for Shogun, who is a great athlete that has showed good performances lately and recovered from injuries.” ~Anderson Silva

I know, Andy didn't exactly have to wait long before he got his MW title shot himself but his UFC debut was as razor sharp as it could get disposing bison-chinned Chris Leben in a matter of 49 seconds – a feat neither Doerksen nor any other fighters post-Silva disposal remotely duplicated albeit winning against The Crippler.
Shogun, by comparison, has been fighting modestly lukewarm despite his last knockout of The Iceman – which, arguably, could be attributed to Liddell's condition than to Old Shogun's return. Somehow, the doubt is borne by the fact that his last two wins were against graying warriors: a 44yo opponent whose last win was against Rua himself roughly 3 years before their UFC meeting; and against Chuck Liddell who has been KOed thrice in his last 4 fights before they met.
Thus, the inevitable Elephant In The Room is: if it's not Shogun, who really deserves this title shot? We all know that Rampage, under the guise of a jaw injury and bad blood against Evans, chose not to fight Lyoto. Franklin on the other hand, for some reason, got billed to fight Hendo [yet again]. Forrest is out of the question, himself having his hands full at the moment [and knee buried in supplication] in preparation for his fight against The Spider. Jones isn't quite ripe albeit riding a 9-fight whoop a$$ spree. Brandon Vera is billed to fight Soszynski on the 29th. So really, is there anybody else?
That's my take. Would love to hear yours.
