The Only Problem Is Vitor’s Still Under Contract With Affliction

July 6, 2009

for the benefit of some who might have overlooked it:

Some might have missed it, however Affliction Entertainment’s VP Tom Atencio certainly didn’t.

During a commercial break in this past Saturday’s TUF 9 Finale, UFC president Dana White publicly stated that he is intending to make a run at former UFC champ Vitor Belfort. The only problem is he’s still under contract with Affliction with a fight right around the corner.

“[White] did say something [about Belfort],” Atencio told us about White’s recruiting tactics. “I’m talking to [Belfort’s] management, so we’re in negotiations. Where Dana came up with that, I don’t know. Maybe he’s just trying to stir the pot. That’s what he does and he does it well.”

Although Atencio was gracious as always throughout the interview, you did get a sense that he may have been a tad irked by the fact that White was trying to dip into Affliction’s talent pool.

The conversation even swayed towards other major sports, where if an owner openly discusses wanting a player under contract with an opposing team, that owner could be fined for tampering.

“Maybe he wants to get hit with a tampering charge,” Atencio jokingly told us about what he thought White’s motives were. “I just don’t know, I can’t speak for Dana. I’m sure he just wants to stir the pot, like I said.”

Oddly, White may have jumped the gun in announcing his pursuit of Belfort’s services. Although the Brazilian has won his previous four scraps, the last two coming under Affliction’s banner, what if he were to lose his Affliction: Trilogy bout against Jorge Santiago?

Would White and Co. show the same desire for a 32-year-old fighter that just dropped his last fight?

Interesting maneuver by White. We’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

elsewhere in the world, this is called inducement by a third party to breach a contract - which, if successfully proved, entails liabilities at prices you've never imagined. oh, dana. the things you do.

Well, when a Red Devil campman gets into the UFC on his own merit, and not on Fedor's coattails, maybe their camp will get more favor with debuting athletes.

Well let me put it this way then. Most of the UFC fighters who debut come out of American Top Team, or American Kickboxing Academy. UFC uses the team fighters of these 2 camps all the time. Why not sign Fedor & use the RED DEVIL team for this as well. And Kiril is a Light Heavyweight! maybe Middleweight, but he stood and took that beating from Buentello and Buentello couldn't finish him. I'm talking about Aleksander Emelianenko, Roman Zentzov. The big hitters.

Lesnar would make the Red Devil's see red. By that I mean their blood and not his for anyone who want to say yeah, they'll make him see his blood.

you two are agreeing that the Red Devil can dominate anywhere but it's just the manner that they ought to be admitted in the ufc that bugs mboo. i think it says a lot about fedor's loyalty to his team mates if not his countrymen - but pips might think of it as a silly condition to say the least. and for all we know, maybe the Red Devil don't want anything to do with ufc. but if they do - whew! - lesnar is in for a methodical extinction.

Why not have them get into the UFC on their own merit and not as a contract clause? That's freakin' silly as hell. "If you want me, you gotta take my entire neighborhood too." C'mon. They can be the top whatever against whomever at wherever. You want in on the stable of most of the elites then forget the whole Red Devil team and make it out on your own. Notice that Kirril(probably got the name misspelt)is a decent heavyweight from their team and didn't do so well with Buentello.
