Of Unlucky Thirteens, Broken Streaks, and Dragon Slayers

August 10, 2009

Machida has had the sublime privilege of puncturing not one, not two, but three winning streaks of previously undefeated fighters.

As the last of the locusts of the post-fight plague retreat to the chasms from which they came, sanity, like a gray and grizzly storm-tested captain, slowly takes back the helm to stir intelligent exchange to the direction it belongs. After all, order is what order does. It is inevitable that he will plop back on to his favorite easy chair, six-pack in hand, as soon as chaos tires itself out.

Now that the pandemonium has subsided, stories of interest begin to blossom like tumors on our lips [thank you, Leonard Cohen]. One that may have escaped our ever curious attention is the sound byte of Randy saying he'd be willing to come back down at 205 – get a hold of this – to fight Lyoto Machida.

Wow. We've heard of the accolades about this Belem native, thus, there is little need to run through them once again. However, there IS a fact fans and naysayers alike might want to know about our LHW Champ. Machida has had the sublime privilege of puncturing not one, not two, but three winning streaks of previously undefeated fighters.

Rich Franklin. When they met in 2003, Lyoto furnished Ace fireworks the latter in his previous 12 bouts had never seen. Machida was then only 2-0 [really!]. It was December 31. What a New Year. Lyoto had a bang. Franklin had a whimper. Thirteen may not be Ace's lucky number.

Thiago Silva. Both Brazilians were then 13-0. Silva was coming off a litany of brutal T/KO wins against UFC's equally heavy hitters. Who knew that as the time of the first round expired so would Thiago? A period to end all periods.

Rashad Evans. Then 18-0 [thanks, Cave]. “You ain't a true champion until you defended it, you cocky son-of-a-Shad!”, sayeth the scriptures. So be it. With Thiago, Lyoto ended a period; with Shad, The Dragon started an age.

Nevertheless, the task at hand now is Shogun, himself a force of nature dispensing fighters left and right with vicious highlight-reel kicks in his glorious Pride days. Nowadays, however, his status as fighter much less as a contender has been under intense scrutiny. How do you think would Rua fare? What would it take for Rua to steal the belt from Lyoto? Has The Dragon met his Slayer?

And, finally, will a Machida-Couture match fly?

Your turn now.. . .

Great blog as always, sorry i'm so late but i've been avoiding the site till i watched WEC i had taped. Shogun shouldnt have much of a chance but thats what makes this sport great and always fun to watch. The Randy v Lyoto fight is great but Randy needs to beat someone first, either Rashad or Rampage.

this is going to be a war, but if shogun wants to prevail the victor he needs to remain level headed and heed this warning "do not be crazy, lol" he cannot fall into role of the guy who comes out guns a-blazin with no regard. the dragons counter punching is superb and i think he would simply pick him apart and end the fight early. but shogun has the skill set to win this one as long as he does not get winded early. i would like to see machidas chin tested at least. who are you going with blast?

It's almost the same thing as the Forrest/Anderson fight.....which Anderson really almost did look like Machida against Forrest......a scrappy guy vs a very intelligent counter-punching machine. Rua could test him on the ground, but I doubt he'll try. He'll swing for the fences and end up falling on his face.

Shogun will SHIFT gears and turn on the NOS. It going to be a war...Machida will still but him to sleep. But it going to be a war..With Couture anything can happen. Anderson vs Machida will fight whether they like it or not . They are under contract. So if Dana later on want to make these happen. It will happen. Beside The Spider is the one saying, he won't fight him. I haven't herd anything from Machida. May The Karate master does wants a piece of The Spider.

Just my $.02 for what it's worth. At this point, I think that Anderson and Machida are going to retain their belts for quite some time. I don't see any of the above being able to defeat either of them. Yes, I only wish they would fight each other but doubt that's going to happen. With the recent acquisition of Big Ben Rothwell; 6'5" 30-6 w/17 KOs,11 Subs,2 Dec's he is simply one that I would add to the above list as a POSSIBILITY of putting on at least a good show to either of them. His losses were all in late rounds; 3KO's,1SUB,2DEC. Big Ben has only ben submitted once in all of his fights, he is a very big guy, a former IFL Standout and in my opinion, a name to possibly add to your list.
