Of Unlucky Thirteens, Broken Streaks, and Dragon Slayers
August 10, 2009Machida has had the sublime privilege of puncturing not one, not two, but three winning streaks of previously undefeated fighters.
As the last of the locusts of the post-fight plague retreat to the chasms from which they came, sanity, like a gray and grizzly storm-tested captain, slowly takes back the helm to stir intelligent exchange to the direction it belongs. After all, order is what order does. It is inevitable that he will plop back on to his favorite easy chair, six-pack in hand, as soon as chaos tires itself out.
Now that the pandemonium has subsided, stories of interest begin to blossom like tumors on our lips [thank you, Leonard Cohen]. One that may have escaped our ever curious attention is the sound byte of Randy saying he'd be willing to come back down at 205 – get a hold of this – to fight Lyoto Machida.

Wow. We've heard of the accolades about this Belem native, thus, there is little need to run through them once again. However, there IS a fact fans and naysayers alike might want to know about our LHW Champ. Machida has had the sublime privilege of puncturing not one, not two, but three winning streaks of previously undefeated fighters.
Rich Franklin. When they met in 2003, Lyoto furnished Ace fireworks the latter in his previous 12 bouts had never seen. Machida was then only 2-0 [really!]. It was December 31. What a New Year. Lyoto had a bang. Franklin had a whimper. Thirteen may not be Ace's lucky number.
Thiago Silva. Both Brazilians were then 13-0. Silva was coming off a litany of brutal T/KO wins against UFC's equally heavy hitters. Who knew that as the time of the first round expired so would Thiago? A period to end all periods.
Rashad Evans. Then 18-0 [thanks, Cave]. “You ain't a true champion until you defended it, you cocky son-of-a-Shad!”, sayeth the scriptures. So be it. With Thiago, Lyoto ended a period; with Shad, The Dragon started an age.
Nevertheless, the task at hand now is Shogun, himself a force of nature dispensing fighters left and right with vicious highlight-reel kicks in his glorious Pride days. Nowadays, however, his status as fighter much less as a contender has been under intense scrutiny. How do you think would Rua fare? What would it take for Rua to steal the belt from Lyoto? Has The Dragon met his Slayer?
And, finally, will a Machida-Couture match fly?
Your turn now.. . .
