Of For[r]ests and Spiders and Keeping A Web Unpunctured [Updated]

August 8, 2009

How could the finite English language contain the outrageous performance of Anderson Silva when he just rendered “laser-precision” a euphemism of and for the ancients?

Now, we writers are hard pressed to innovate. Ugh, the horror! Not only did The Spider welcome Forrest’s “intelligent aggression”, moreover, he craved for [well] more – and may very well be taken as cockiness by some but that deserves another blog. I feel sad for Griffin, very likeable a person and a fighter that he is, he got reduced to another toy, the middle weight tyrant, without breaking a sweat, played with.

On the other hand, however, props must be handed to whom it is due. Forrest came in to the fight knowing fully well the risks involved and it is with his unwavering heart that he fought this fight. Amen Forrest Griffin. The only thing bigger than you in all of MMA is your heart.

This time I hope the acidic doubts gnawing on fans' faith on Anderson Silva has been dispelled. I said it before I will say it again, he was bored against his Cote and Leites fights. You put a decent opponent before him, he bares his fangs.

Now the elephant in the octagon is: At 10-0 in the UFC, who’s next for Andy at middleweight? Really, is there anybody else? And if he shamed his welcome parties at 205 with great ease, how would the welterweight champ, GSP, fare against The Spider? Will a match between these two great fighters still feasible? To say that GSP will get BJ Penned at 185 might be a naïve understatement considering Silva's impeccable performance tonight. Rush vs The Spider may very well be man versus an act of god…

What about Lyoto? Here's what Anderson has to say about that possibility: “Lyoto’s my friend. He’s my brother, and there’s no way that fight will happen.” There was a pause for laughter and to take account of the gamesmanship between fighter and promoter. “And also not just because (Lyoto’s) my friend. (Lyoto would) be a big problem for me.” ^

Is he back? NO. ANDERSON "THE SPIDER" SILVA NEVER LEFT.

Concur, refute, for god’s sake free your mind.

Noteworthy [which means please write about it]: Penn’s title defense. Florian’s gameplan. Riley’s humility. Almeida’s strength. Sadollah’s horrible stoppage loss.

I also want to throw my hat in Henderson's corner. I've been sayin' for a while now that Henderson'll be the one to take the title off of Silva. Just an Afraidor Vs. Anderson battle would "that" fight.

Silva v. Fedor? Im suprised no one talked about it earlier. I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say that the Spider would win. Fedor has had maaany fights, but he has never faced a man with the precision striking of Silva. Other opponentssss...umm, well Hendo deserves his title rematch, Lyoto would be enjoyable, as well as dramatic, and the GSP matchup at 185.

And so the fighters whom you suggested are:

    Arc: 1.Hendo or Nate-Maia winner 2.Vitor 3.Machida or GSP

    Smokez and Ton: 1.Machida

    Cave: 1.Randy 2.Kongo 3.Fedor

    Mboo: 1.Fedor - by concurrence 2.Hendo

    MMA66: 1.Shad

    Bibi: 1.Hendo 2.Rampage

    TMac 1.Fedor 2.Hendo 3.Lyoto 4.GSP

The only names predominantly appearing are Hendo, Lyoto, Fedor, and GSP. No surprises there. I'll try to dissect the possible match-ups if Cave the great blogs machine doesn't beat me to it first. Thanks for pitching in, everyone. Your comments are the complement of every blog in our community. Cheers!

GSP vs The Spider....These would be the fight people will talk for years until it happens. It's not a good idea for The Spider to drop those hands and give his opponent free shots to his face. Don't do that against Rampage or Dan Henderson. You don't want to go to sleep.

Excellent point concerning the Cote and Leites matchups. Perhaps he was bored and it showed. His mistake was toying with them rather than dispatching with great speed and ease. If Silva had performed against Cote and Leites as he did against Griffin, perhaps the UFC would have gotten the message earlier, and provided the challenge that Silva and the fans crave. This was too easy. During the post fight press conference, even Silva stated that he wants the greatest challenges possible. Back to the drawing board UFC. Time to do some real homework.

Personally, i would have preferred to see Rashad matched up with Silva instead. I understand that the TUF commitments prevented this possiblity at the moment. Sometimes the practice of patience will yeild superior results. If you really want to give Silva the very toughest competition, wait until the very best opportunity presents itself. If you do not choose to, the fans will pay to see Silva simply outclass fighters that pose no threat or challenge to him. The results of last night were exactly what i expected.
